Hypnobirthing (labour without Pain)

It was widely reported that Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, successfully used hypnotherapy to treat her acute morning sickness in early pregnancy and opted for a natural hypnobirth for Prince George, supported by Prince William. The Daily Mail and Vanity Fair reported that Kate described the birth to her best friends as "perfect" and said that her birthing plan went off without a hitch, enabling her to deliver naturally. "She said that it was straightforward and there were no complications. She wanted a natural birth and was so happy that she was able to have one."

Other celebrity fans of hypnobirthing include: Bridget Fonda, Giselle Bunchen, Miranda Kerr, Melissa Joan Hart, Alanis Morisette, Emily Deschanel, & Jessica Alba, who says: "I highly recommend it. It just makes you chill. I was freaked my first time going into labor, like, 'What if I panic? What if I just freak out and am not prepared for it?' This just prepares you."

Even if there are complications, hypnobirthing is still extremely helpful as it enables the mother to stay calm and in control, and also reduces bleeding and speeds up healing and recovery.

What is hypnobirthing?

Is the special preparation for childbirth, through which women can experience a safe, serene, and satisfying birth, free of the fear that causes most of the tension and pain in labour. Using hypnotherapy, positive suggestion, triggers, visualization and future pacing.   Hypnobirthing is a method of relaxed, natural childbirth education that instructs women on how to use their natural instinct to bring about safer, easier, and more comfortable birth.

Hypnobirthing is based on the belief that severe pain to the mother and distress to the baby are not anticipated during labour.  The theory is that when the mother to be is relaxed and comfortable, she produces both oxytocin (hormone released when we fall in love – as well as feel good hormone (endorphins, which are released following exercise.)  These are thought to be more effective than any traditional pain relief.  Problem only start when panic sets in. The body goes into stress response producing adrenaline, which actually stops labour.  No endorphin is produced  the pain become unmanageable.

Benefits of Hypnobirthing

  • Reduction in production of stress hormone = less pain from muscle tension.

  • Shorter labour, both first and second stages, so reduced surgical delivery time.

  • Less need for, or use of pain medication.

  • Less change of hemorrhage.

  • Less complications or need for intervention.

  • Babies are more content and less likely to be traumatized.

  • Less postpartum depression and better bonding between mother and baby.

  • Better bonding with father, especially when he is the birth coach/companion.
